Watch Out For The Elements: MTV2 Documents The Aesthetics of Hip-Hop -- Come See Them Live At Hip-Hop Fundamentals 101

MTV2 is airing a five part documentary series this week entitled The Elements -- capturing the aesthetics of Hip-Hop we all know and love. Hip-Hop Fundamentals 101's very own Rob Swift is featured in the D.J. episode. Rabbi D's crew and NJPAC Hip-Hop Alumni Beat Boxer Entertainment are featured as well -- in the beat box episode.

Watch the series to get a good understanding of the more popular aspects of the culture and come experience them live at Hip-Hop Fundamentals 101 on Saturday April 4th, 8PM. Click on the Box Office for tickets.

The U.S.Hip Hop Ambassador and previous NJPAC Hip Hop festival performing artist Toni Blackman recently posed the question, "What do female MC's offer Hip Hop?"

"What do I bring to the table as an emcee who is female? In many cases, I bring the dag on table! - not only quality music and content, but detail, thoughtfulness, creativity and a long-term vision upon which to lay these goods so that others can have a wholesome feast.

Hip Hop is a potluck of sorts. Everyone brings something...no matter how rich or trifling, talented or bland. Some people always bring drinks. Others always bring desserts. Then there are those who not only bring the main course, but the necessary cups, utensils, napkins, foil and even the table upon which we eat.  

I find that most women tend to bring things to the 'party' that many others just forget. Besides, It is a luxury to forget things when there is an auntie, mama or sista-friend  who - by nature - remembers to pack the stuff that others neglect or simply just hate to carry. 

The truth is, talent, skill and appeal are neither wholly male nor female. Most amazing artists have properties of both masculine and feminine principles that I think enhance their craft. The strongest, most well-rounded male artists on the scene  (in my opinion) seem to have a connection with their feminine instinct that makes what they are serving both desirable, long-lasting and complete..."

FEATURE FILM: The Hip Hop Project

Synopsis: From Executive Producers Bruce Willis and Queen Latifah, THE HIP HOP PROJECT is the compelling story of Kazi, a formerly homeless teenager who inspired a group of New York City teens to transform their life stories into powerful works of art, using hip hop as a vehicle for self-development and personal discovery. The film traces the evolution of this award-winning outreach program developed by Kazi, a formerly homeless teenager turned youth mentor.  Kazi challenges these young people to write music about real issues affecting their lives as they strive to overcome daunting obstacles to produce a collaborative album.

Russell Simmons, hip hop mogul and long-time supporter of the project, partners with Bruce Willis to donate a recording studio to the Hip Hop Project. After four years of collaboration, the group produces a powerful and thought-provoking CD filled with moving personal narratives and sharp social commentary. In contrast to all of the negative attention focused on hip hop and rap music, this is a story of hope, healing and the realization of dreams. Inspired by Kazi’s work, 100% of the net profits from this film are being donated to organizations working with youth.

ROBIN ‘KHEPERAH’ KEARSE

ROBIN ‘KHEPERAH' KEARSE is a record label veteran with ten years experience in marketing, A&R and promotion at Def Jam, Sony Music and Arista Records/Bad Boy Entertainment. Kheperah is also a powerful speaker, arts based educator and prolific writer. Kheperah has recently been featured on The Maury Povich Show, where she provides positive interventions for out of control teen girls to help them turn their lives around. She is also featured in the award winning documentary, The Hip Hop Project, executive produced by Bruce Willis and Queen Latifah. She is currently the Director of Strategic Marketing at Niche Media, a luxury magazine publishing company.

After ten years of marketing and promoting Hip Hop and R&B music, Kheperah took a break from the music industry to focus on another passion: youth and community empowerment. She created GEMNASIUM, a self development workshop series using tools, materials and relevant life experience that youth can directly identify with to promote inherent self-worth, mental and emotional health and inspire discovery of purpose. As a social entrepreneur, Kheperah has led numerous youth and community based programs; she has worked with government offices to promote dialogue, education and positive alternatives to youth violence and has served as a host, mentor, and on-air personality. She donated her professional services as a marketing mentor to The Hip Hop Project, an award-winning youth program, which teaches High School students the inner workings of the music business and connects them with industry professionals. This process became the subject of a documentary film of the same name, which debuted in theatres May 2007.

Let me introduce myself. My name is...

April is soon to come and I wanted to drop in on the NJPAC Hiphop Blog and introduce myself. Hi my name is Conscious, I'm one of a few artists who are involved in the upcoming Hiphop Fundamentals 101 event (April 1st till April 4th).

I am honored to be a part of this production and my contribution will be in the form of visual art and a bit of sound design to accompany my exhibit. I will bring forth a piece of 'street art'. I'm sure that the piece will intrigue most in attendance, as it will be very unique and possibly, not exactly what most would expect.

I look forward to April and adding a bit of commentary regularly on the NJPAC Hiphop Blog.

This piece was originally started during a live reading of Sumkid Majere's 'Nobody Hole, during the 2nd Annual Nobody Ball at The Knitting Factory. Ultimately, I completed the piece months later at home.
